Kingdom Come: The Politics of the Millennium

Murray Rothbard

by Murray Rothbard
Christianity has played a central role in Western civilization and contributed an important influence on the development of classical-liberal thought. Not surprisingly, Christian beliefs about the "end times" are very important for us right now. Christian Reconstructionism is one of the fastest growing and most influential currents in American religious and political life. Though the fascinating discussions by Jeffrey Tucker and Gary North (in the July and September issues of Liberty) have called libertarian attention to, and helped explain, this movement, to clarify Christian Reconstructionism fully we have to understand the role and problem of millennialism in Christian thought.

Shout for joy, you upright;
praise comes well from the honest.

What is the Meaning of “Shortly Come To Pass” In Revelation 1:1?

by Don K. Preston
My friend Sam Dawson recently sent me an article penned by Wayne Jackson, of Stockton, California. Jackson has been an out-spoken critical of Covenant Eschatology, although he has never had the courage to engage in honorable debate on the subject. And this in spite of the fact that he has written articles in the past stating that there needs to be such discussions. Although various and multiple attempts have been made to get Jackson to debate me, he has adamantly refused. While he has never had the courage to engage in formal debate, he sometimes ventures to write an article condemning preterists as heretics, who abuse the scriptures. The article that he recently wrote on, “These things must shortly come to pass” is one such (failed) attempt to negate the time statements of scripture.

The Danger of Christian Sacralism and Statism

Lately I have been interacting with people here and there about the relationship between Christianity and the State...and amazingly most opposition to State-driven Christianity comes from Conservatives. When I tell people that I refuse to say "the pledge" they get quite animated and even upset. Very frustrating... Here it is a blog entry from Jonathan Grubbs on Statism and Christianity, using Anabaptists as an example: "The Anabaptists assailed this imbalance, as did they did all forms of state coercion. If they were opposed to "christening," it was only because they were opposed to the "Christendom" this practice represented. For this insistence upon a "Believers' Church," separate from the state, Manz was bound and sent to the bottom of the Limmat. Oh yes, there were cries of "Freedom of religion" -- as long as you supported the right religion. And thus the Christian sacralism of Constantine became the Christian sacralism of Luther and later of Calvin."

What Is the Meaning of “Shortly Come to Pass”?

by Wayne Jackson

“What is the meaning of the expression ‘shortly come to pass,’ found in Revelation 1:1?”

The final book of the New Testament begins in this fashion. “The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass?” (1:1a).

The phrase, “must shortly come to pass,” translates the Greek dei genesthai en tachei. Of special interest is the term tachei. This word, together with several cognate forms, expresses various shades of meaning.

Pain Forces Us to Hope. Silence Forces Us to Listen.

Psalm 77 (jeff carter)

We live in a wonderful time for reading the Bible. There has never been a time when the word of God was so freely and so widely available to those wishing to read it, especially those readers who read and speak English. There are so many English translations and paraphrases of the bible, that one can easily be confused by their multitude.

Tom Waits: theologian of the dysangelion

Tom Waits

by Ben Myers
To my delight (and my wife’s dismay), my collection of Tom Waits CDs has grown nicely this Christmas. I’ve been absolutely addicted to Tom Waits all year – I can hardly bear to hear anything else. I don’t think it’s too much of an exaggeration to describe Tom Waits as a “theologian” – as long as we add that he’s a theologian of the dys-angelion, the “bad news.” His songs conjure up a swirling chaos of monsters and madness, devils and despair – and on the horizon of this dark world we glimpse the first faint glow of dawn, the surprising appearance of grace “de profundis” (Psalm 130:1).

Turning Jesus over to Caesar

Here Jesus is confronted with one of the most direct political questions that we see addressed in the entire New Testament. Do the Israelites need to pay taxes to the Roman government that has set itself up as God? How will Jesus answer this question?

“Last Days” Not Quite Prophetic

Gary DeMar responds to an e-mail he received recently in reaction to an American Vision ad sent through e-mail that commented on the dispensational thinking that has led to the decline of Christianity in America. This e-mailer tries to use passages that talk about the "last days" to bolster the idea that Jesus will come back only after things get really bad.

The Trouble with Conservatives

by Jacob G. Hornberger
The trouble with conservatives is that they fail to live the principles of freedom that they expound. The problem, however, is not simply that conservatives set high standards and then fail to meet them after striving to do so. The problem is that conservatives expound standards that they knowingly and deliberately violate.

TruthVoice 2010 is on for May 28 and May 29

A while back it became apparent that I would be unable to support and handle the logistics of planning a 2010 conference, and I announced that TruthVoice 2010 was unlikely. Well, I have some good news - it seems like TruthVoice 2010 is not only likely, but it will DEFINITELY happen, thanks to a generous sponsor offerring to cover the entire cost of the conference!

Heaven: A fool's paradise

Why do the majority of Britons still believe in life after death? Heaven isn't a wonderful place filled with light – it is a pernicious construct with a short and bloody history, writes Johann Hari

John Lennon urged us: "Imagine there's no heaven/It's easy if you try/No hell below us/Above us only sky." Yet the religious aren't turning to Lennonism any faster than Leninism. Today, according to a new book by Lisa Miller, Newsweek's religion correspondent, 81 per cent of Americans and 51 per cent of Brits say they believe in heaven – an increase of 10 per cent since a decade ago. Of those, 71 per cent say it is "an actual place". Indeed, 43 per cent believe their pets – cats, rats, and snakes – are headed into the hereafter with them to be stroked for eternity. So why can't humans get over the Pearly Gates?
